What Are Runes?
The runes are an ancient alphabetic writing system used by Germanic and Norse peoples from approximately the 1st to 17th centuries CE. Each rune character carries phonetic value but also symbolic meaning — associated with cosmological forces, natural phenomena, and human experiences from the Norse mythological worldview. The Elder Futhark (named for its first six letters: F-U-TH-A-R-K) is the oldest and most widely used runic alphabet for divination, containing 24 runes organized into three groups of eight called "aettir" (families), each associated with a major Norse deity.
First Aett (Freyr's Eight): Earth and Fertility
Fehu (ᚠ): Cattle, wealth, abundance, luck. Material success and vital energy. Uruz (ᚢ): Aurochs (wild ox), strength, health, primal force. Raw vitality and personal power. Thurisaz (ᚦ): Thor's hammer, protection, conflict, necessary destruction. Defensive power and boundary-setting. Ansuz (ᚨ): Mouth of Odin, communication, wisdom, divine inspiration. Simple Rune Reading Methods
Draw one rune for daily guidance. For a three-rune spread: past, present, future (or situation, action, outcome). For complex questions, use Odin's rune (one rune drawn from a bag for the key message). Write the symbol and meditate on its image; rune meanings reveal themselves through contemplation as much as through study.
