What Are the Elder Futhark Runes?
The Elder Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabets, used in Germanic cultures from approximately the 2nd to 8th centuries CE. The name "Futhark" derives from its first six runes: F, U, Þ (th), A, R, K. The 24 runes are divided into three groups (aettir) of eight, each ruled by a Norse deity: Freya's Aett, Heimdall's Aett, and Tyr's Aett.
Runes are not merely letters — they are sacred symbols representing forces of nature, cosmic principles, and stages of human experience. Each rune has a name, a shape, a phonetic value, and a deep symbolic meaning rooted in Norse mythology and the Old Germanic worldview.
Freya's Aett (First Eight Runes)
1. Fehu (ᚠ) — Cattle, Wealth, Abundance
The first rune represents livestock (the original currency), movable wealth, and abundance. Upright: financial success, new beginnings in prosperity, energy flowing freely. Reversed: loss, stagnation, greed. Question it asks: How am I managing my resources?
2. Uruz (ᚢ) — Aurochs, Wild Strength, Primal Force
Named for the extinct wild ox (aurochs), Uruz represents primal strength, endurance, and wild natural power. Upright: vitality, strength, breakthrough. Reversed: missed opportunity, weakness, obstruction.
3. Thurisaz (ᚦ) — Giants, Threshold, Confrontation
The thorn rune represents the jotnar (giants), Thor's hammer, and the threshold between worlds. Upright: protection, defense, need to confront obstacles. Reversed: danger, recklessness, someone working against you.
4. Ansuz (ᚨ) — Odin, Communication, Divine Breath
Associated with Odin and his gift of language and wisdom. Upright: clear communication, inspiration, wisdom received. Reversed: misunderstanding, manipulation, blocked communication.
5. Raidho (ᚱ) — Journey, Right Action, Cosmic Order
The rune of riding and journeys, both physical and spiritual. Upright: right action, movement, following your path. Reversed: detours, disruptions, or being forced off course.
6. Kenaz (ᚲ) — Torch, Knowledge, Controlled Fire
The torch rune represents controlled fire — the fire of the hearth, of knowledge, of creative inspiration. Upright: clarity, knowledge, creative fire. Reversed: false illumination, burning out, hidden things.
7. Gebo (ᚷ) — Gift, Exchange, Balance
The rune of gifts and equal exchange. It cannot be reversed because its shape is a cross — balanced in all directions. It represents sacred contracts, hospitality, and the reciprocal nature of all relationships.
8. Wunjo (ᚹ) — Joy, Harmony, Clan
The rune of joy, fellowship, and fulfilled wishes. Upright: happiness, success, belonging, wishes fulfilled. Reversed: sorrow, alienation, conflict within a group.
Heimdall's Aett (Second Eight Runes)
9. Hagalaz (ᚺ) — Hail, Disruption, Natural Forces
Hail from the sky — sudden disruption that cannot be controlled. One of three "avertive" runes. Hagalaz represents uncontrollable forces of change, often destructive in the short term but clearing the way for new growth. Cannot be reversed.
10. Nauthiz (ᚾ) — Need, Necessity, Resistance
The rune of need and constraint. Upright: necessary hardship that builds character, working through limitations. Reversed: deep deprivation, resisting necessary change.
11. Isa (ᛁ) — Ice, Stillness, Stasis
Pure stillness and stillness alone. Isa represents a period of frozen stasis where nothing can move. Cannot be reversed. It counsels patience, stillness, and waiting for the thaw — or reveals that something is frozen/stuck.
12. Jera (ᛃ) — Year, Harvest, Natural Cycles
The rune of the yearly cycle and harvest. Cannot be reversed. Jera confirms that right action brings right results over time — the harvest you reap reflects the seeds you sowed. It counsels patience and trust in natural processes.
13. Eihwaz (ᛇ) — Yew Tree, Transformation, Axis Mundi
The yew tree — both toxic and medicinal, symbol of death and immortality. Eihwaz represents the World Tree (Yggdrasil) and transformation through descent. Cannot be reversed.
14. Perthro (ᛈ) — Dice Cup, Fate, Mystery
The most mysterious rune — associated with the hidden, with fate, with the Well of Wyrd where the Norns weave destiny. Upright: mystery, that which is hidden, luck, synchronicity. Reversed: secrets causing harm, addiction, compulsion.
15. Algiz (ᛉ) — Elk, Protection, Sanctuary
The protection rune — shaped like an elk's antlers or a human with arms raised. Upright: protection, connection with divine, spiritual path. Reversed: vulnerability, needing protection, not heeding warning signs.
16. Sowilo (ᛊ) — Sun, Victory, Wholeness
The sun rune — pure life force, victory, and the hero's journey. Cannot be reversed. Sowilo brings success, clarity, and the power to achieve goals. It represents the self at its highest potential.
Tyr's Aett (Third Eight Runes)
17-24. Tiwaz through Dagaz
Tiwaz (justice, sacrifice), Berkana (new beginnings, feminine growth), Ehwaz (partnership, movement), Mannaz (the self, humanity), Laguz (water, flow, intuition), Ingwaz (fertility, inner fire), Othala (inheritance, homeland), Dagaz (dawn, awakening, transformation).
Each of these final eight runes completes the human journey from justice through awakening — the arc of a fully conscious life.
