Algiz: Arms Raised in Protection and Prayer
Algiz (ᛉ) — also known as Elhaz or Algir — is one of the most visually distinctive runes in the Elder Futhark. Its shape resembles a Y with a vertical line through the center: three prongs reaching upward, like elk antlers, like a human figure with arms raised toward the sky in prayer or defense, or like a three-pronged protective hand.
This shape encodes its meaning perfectly: Algiz is simultaneously about protection (arms raised in defense) and spiritual connection (arms raised toward the divine). The same gesture that shields against what comes from below reaches toward what comes from above.
Core Meanings
Protection and Defense
Algiz is the classic protection rune — used for thousands of years as an amulet against harm, evil spirits, and hostile forces. It doesn't attack or repel aggressively; rather, it creates a protected sanctuary, a "circle of protection" that harmful energies cannot enter.
In modern runic practice, Algiz is inscribed or visualized when entering potentially dangerous situations, creating protective boundaries for a home or sacred space, or working with spiritual forces that require careful navigation.
Spiritual Path and Higher Connection
Algiz also represents one's spiritual path — the journey toward connection with divine or higher forces. When Algiz appears in a reading, it often suggests the querent is (or should be) prioritizing spiritual development, following their higher calling, or strengthening their connection with protective guides or ancestors.
Intuitive Warning System
The elk uses its acute senses to detect danger long before it arrives. Algiz upright can signal that your own instinctive warning system is active and should be heeded — something is being sensed that hasn't yet become visible.
Algiz Reversed
Reversed Algiz is a serious warning: your defenses are down. You may be in a vulnerable position, ignoring warning signs, or have lowered your boundaries through naivety, trust misplaced, or deliberate self-exposure to dangerous influences. It counsels immediate attention to protection and caution about who you trust.
Using Algiz as a Talisman
Draw or carve Algiz on doorways for home protection. Inscribe on jewelry for personal protection. Visualize Algiz surrounding yourself and those you love when protection is needed. Many practitioners make Algiz one of the first runes they learn because of its immediate practical protective application.
