The Rune of Fulfilled Happiness
Wunjo (ᚹ) closes Freya's Aett — the first group of eight runes — with the fulfillment that all the preceding runes have been building toward. After the raw energy of Fehu, the wild strength of Uruz, the threshold challenges of Thurisaz, the divine communication of Ansuz, the journey of Raidho, the illumination of Kenaz, and the sacred exchange of Gebo — Wunjo brings it all to fulfillment in joy.
The name translates as "joy," "glory," or "bliss" — and specifically the joy that comes from belonging: to your clan, your people, your place. This is not solitary happiness but the happiness of genuine connection and community.
Core Meanings
Joy and Happiness
When Wunjo appears, joy is present or approaching. It's one of the most genuinely auspicious runes — unlike some runes that promise success with conditions attached, Wunjo is simply joyful. It announces a period of happiness, celebration, and the good feeling that comes when life is genuinely working.
Wishes Fulfilled
Wunjo is also used as a wish rune — associated with the granting of wishes. When used in magical workings, Wunjo amplifies the energy of desire and intention, supporting their fulfillment. When it appears in divination, it can suggest that what you've been hoping for is coming to pass.
Harmony and Fellowship
The joy Wunjo represents is specifically communal — it's the warmth of belonging to your tribe, of shared celebration, of being surrounded by your people at their best. It can indicate happy family gatherings, a team achieving something together, or the deep comfort of being truly known and accepted.
Wunjo Reversed
Reversed Wunjo introduces shadow: sorrow replacing joy, harmony disrupted by conflict, community fractured by misunderstanding. It may indicate a period of alienation, mourning for happiness that has passed, or a situation where what promised joy has turned disappointing.
Working with Wunjo
Use Wunjo in intentions around joy, celebration, and the fulfillment of wishes. It's particularly powerful for wish-working rituals and for drawing joyful, harmonious community toward you. Carry Wunjo when you need to access your own capacity for happiness and lightheartedness.
