Know Thyself: The Human Rune
Mannaz (ᛗ) means "man" or "human being" — not in the gendered sense but in the ancient Indo-European sense of "the thinking one." Its shape combines two Wunjo runes back to back, suggesting the mirror relationship between self and other, the individual and the community, the inner world and the outer world.
Mannaz asks the oldest philosophical question: Who are you? And it extends this into its social dimension: Who are you in relation to others? What is your place in the human story?

The Self and Self-Knowledge
Mannaz upright begins with the individual self — but a self understood clearly and honestly. It's associated with self-awareness, psychological insight, and the willingness to examine your own patterns, biases, and blind spots without flinching. The Delphic Oracle's "Know thyself" is essentially the teaching of Mannaz.
The Social Self
Mannaz also represents your relationships and your place in social structures. It can address questions of reputation, how you're perceived by others, your social intelligence, and the give-and-take of human relationships. When it appears, it often suggests paying attention to the social dimensions of a situation.
Shared Humanity
Mannaz carries the recognition of what all humans share: consciousness, mortality, the capacity for language and culture, the need for connection, the experience of suffering and joy. This shared humanity is both humbling and elevating — you are not separate from or superior to others. You are of the same substance.
Mannaz Reversed
Reversed Mannaz suggests problems with the self or in social situations. This may include self-deception, an inflated or deflated sense of self, social manipulation or being manipulated, isolation, or a situation where human relationships have become adversarial or dehumanizing.
