Hagalaz (ᚺ) means "hail" — frozen precipitation that arrives suddenly, damages crops and structures, and is entirely beyond human control. It's the ninth rune, positioned at the beginning of the second aett, marking a threshold in the runic journey: the comfortable, controlled world of the first eight runes gives way to the untameable forces of the cosmos.
Hagalaz cannot be reversed — its meaning is the same regardless of orientation. This itself is significant: you cannot flip Hagalaz into something more comfortable. The hail falls when it falls.
