Tiwaz (ᛏ) is named for Tyr, the Norse god of justice, law, and righteous battle. Tyr's myth tells his story perfectly: when the gods needed to bind the great wolf Fenrir, the beast would only accept the magical chain if one of the gods placed their hand in Fenrir's mouth as a pledge of good faith. Tyr placed his hand — knowing the gods planned to break their word. Fenrir bit off his hand. Tyr sacrificed a limb for the greater good.
