What Are the Lunar Nodes?
The North Node and South Node (also called the Lunar Nodes or Dragon's Head and Tail) are not planets — they're mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun). They're always exactly opposite each other in the birth chart, forming an axis that in spiritual astrology is considered to represent the soul's evolutionary direction.
The South Node represents where you're coming from — your past life karma, your inherited skills, your default comfort zone, and the patterns you've already mastered but may be over-relying on. The North Node represents where you're headed — your soul's growth edge, the qualities and experiences you're here to develop in this lifetime, the direction that will feel simultaneously uncomfortable and deeply meaningful.
North Node by Sign
North Node in Aries (South Node in Libra)
Your soul's growth edge involves claiming your own identity, desires, and courage — moving from the Libran pattern of over-compromising, people-pleasing, and defining yourself primarily through relationships. The challenge: stepping forward even when you're afraid of being seen as selfish or aggressive.
North Node in Taurus (South Node in Scorpio)
Moving from Scorpionic patterns of control, intensity, and transformation toward Taurean qualities of simplicity, physical presence, patience, and sustainable pleasure. The challenge: trusting that stability isn't stagnation.
North Node in Gemini (South Node in Sagittarius)
Moving from a tendency toward big-picture philosophizing and seeking ultimate truths toward curiosity, flexibility, and being genuinely present with the immediate details of life. The challenge: finding meaning in the small and near, not only the grand.
North Node in Cancer (South Node in Capricorn)
Moving from achievement-focused, emotionally contained Capricorn patterns toward the Cancerian values of emotional vulnerability, nurturing, family connection, and inner security. The challenge: allowing yourself to need and to be needed.
North Node in Leo (South Node in Aquarius)
Moving from Aquarian patterns of collective focus and emotional distance toward authentic self-expression, creative courage, and the willingness to be seen and celebrated as an individual. The challenge: risking vulnerability in the service of genuine self-expression.
North Node in Virgo (South Node in Pisces)
Moving from Piscean tendencies to dissolve, escape, and merge toward practical skill, discernment, health, and service. The challenge: using your sensitivity in practical, grounded service rather than retreating from it.
How to Work With Your North Node
The North Node direction will consistently feel like the challenging path — because it is. You're not naturally fluent in North Node qualities; you're developing them. The South Node activities feel familiar and comfortable, which is why we return to them when stressed. The growth practice is to notice when you're defaulting to South Node patterns out of fear or habit, and to consciously practice reaching toward the North Node — even when it's uncomfortable, especially when it's uncomfortable.
