What You Need to Begin

To generate your birth chart, you need three pieces of information: birth date (day, month, year), birth time (as accurate as possible — ideally from a birth certificate), and birth location (city and country). Birth time is critical because it determines your rising sign and house placements, which change every two hours. If you don't know your birth time, you can still read a chart with the approximate Sun and Moon positions, but the rising sign and houses will be unknown.

Step 1: Identify the Big Three

Begin with the three most important personal points: Sun sign (the sign the Sun was in at your birth — your core identity), Moon sign (the sign the Moon was in — your emotional nature), and Rising sign/Ascendant (the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — your physical presentation and life approach). Together, these three give you the essential flavor of the personality and life orientation.

Step 2: Note the Dominant Elements and Modes

Count how many planets fall in fire, earth, air, and water signs. An excess of one element shows where most of the person's energy flows; a lack of an element often indicates either avoidance or intense longing for that element's qualities. Similarly, count planets in cardinal, fixed, and mutable modes to understand whether the chart is oriented toward initiation, persistence, or adaptation.

Step 3: Identify Prominent Planets

Some planets are "louder" in a chart than others: Planets in the 1st house or conjunct the ascendant are extremely prominent in the personality. Planets conjunct the Sun or Moon color these fundamental forces significantly. The chart ruler (the planet ruling the ascendant sign) has extra importance — its placement describes how the individual most naturally moves through life.

Step 4: Look at Key Aspects

Aspects are angular relationships between planets that show how different parts of the psyche interact. Begin with the major aspects: Conjunction (0°): planets merged and intensified. Opposition (180°): tension and projection between two planetary principles. Square (90°): friction and challenge between two planetary principles. Trine (120°): ease and natural flow between two planetary principles. Sextile (60°): opportunity and harmonious potential between two planetary principles.

Step 5: Identify Your Chart's Story

After these initial analyses, step back and ask: What is the overall story this chart is telling? Is it a chart of intense internal tension (many squares and oppositions) driving powerful outer achievement? A chart of natural ease and talent that needs external challenge to reach its potential (many trines)? An emotionally complex chart with significant water emphasis? A practical, achievement-focused earth-heavy chart? Charts tell stories — your job is to read the narrative, not just the individual symbols.
