What Is BaZi?
BaZi (八字, "eight characters") — also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is the most sophisticated Chinese astrology system, using your birth year, month, day, and hour to construct a chart of eight Chinese characters, each consisting of a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. These eight characters encode the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in their yin and yang expressions in specific combinations, revealing a comprehensive map of your innate character, natural strengths, life challenges, relationships, career tendencies, and the cycles of fortune and difficulty through life.
The Structure: Four Pillars, Eight Characters
Each of the four pillars (year, month, day, hour) consists of two characters: a Heavenly Stem (天干, tiāngān — one of 10 possible characters) and an Earthly Branch (地支, dìzhī — one of 12 possible characters). The Heavenly Stems represent the elemental energies at their most refined and visible level; the Earthly Branches encode more complex interactions, containing hidden stems within them. The Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar — is considered the most important element in the chart, representing you, the individual, whose chart is being read.
The Five Elements in BaZi
The five elements interact in cycles of generation (Wood feeds Fire; Fire creates Earth/ash; Earth contains Metal; Metal carries Water; Water nourishes Wood) and control (Wood controls Earth; Earth controls Water; Water controls Fire; Fire controls Metal; Metal controls Wood). A BaZi chart is analyzed by examining which elements are strong, weak, missing, or in excess, and how the elements interact with each other and with luck cycles. The goal is to understand your elemental profile — and to identify what elements support you (favorable elements to seek in environment, relationships, career direction) and what elements challenge you.
Ten-Year Luck Pillars
BaZi's most distinctive feature is the Ten-Year Luck Cycle system: every 10 years (aligned to your birth data), you enter a new luck pillar with different elemental energies. Whether this luck pillar's elements are favorable or unfavorable to your natal chart determines whether that decade is generally favorable or challenging. Within each decade, the annual Yearly Pillar further modifies the energy. This creates a remarkably specific timeline of life fortune that experienced BaZi practitioners use to anticipate and plan for major life changes.
