What is the Five-Grid name analysis?
The Five Grids (Wuge) method is a traditional Chinese name-analysis system. It converts the stroke counts of your name into five numbers — Heaven, Personality, Earth, External and Total grids — and reads their fortune against the 81 numerology numbers. This tool counts strokes strictly per the Kangxi Dictionary and combines the Three Talents and Five Elements to interpret personality, career, love and health.
How are the five grids calculated?
The Heaven grid derives from the surname's strokes and reflects inherited fortune. The Personality grid — surname plus the first given character — governs your core character and life path. The Earth grid sums the given name and rules the first half of life, while the External and Total grids reflect social support and the overall pattern. The grid numbers are then mapped onto the Five Elements to yield the Three Talents configuration and an overall score.
Tips for name testing
Enter the name you actually use every day — simplified and traditional forms differ in stroke count, and this tool converts everything to Kangxi traditional strokes. Treat the score as entertainment: a low score is no reason to worry, since a name is only one factor among effort and choice.
FAQ
Why count strokes by the Kangxi Dictionary?
The Five-Grid system was built on traditional character forms as recorded in the Kangxi Dictionary. Simplified characters are converted back to their Kangxi stroke counts — for example 马 counts as the 10 strokes of 馬 — keeping the numerology consistent with the classical system.
What does each of the five grids mean?
Heaven reflects inherited fortune and ancestry; Personality is the core grid governing character and the main life path; Earth rules early-life foundations; External reflects relationships and outside support; Total governs the overall trend of middle and later life.
My score is low — should I change my name?
No need to worry. The Five-Grid score is just one traditional perspective and cannot decide your fate. It works best as a fun reference when naming a baby or choosing a pen name — not as a basis for life decisions.
Can I test an English name?
Only pure Chinese names of 2–5 characters are supported, because the Five-Grid system is built entirely on Chinese character strokes — alphabetic names have no stroke numerology to apply.
