The Solar Plexus: Your Power Center
The solar plexus chakra (Manipura — "city of jewels") is located in the upper abdomen, roughly two to three inches above the navel. It governs personal power, self-esteem, autonomy, will, and the capacity to act from your authentic core rather than from fear or others' expectations. A healthy, open solar plexus feels like inner fire: a stable sense of confidence, clear sense of direction, the ability to make decisions and follow through, and comfort with taking up appropriate space in the world. When it's blocked or wounded, life becomes characterized by self-doubt, indecision, and the exhausting effort of people-pleasing.
Signs of Solar Plexus Imbalance
Underactive: Chronic self-doubt; inability to make decisions; excessive people-pleasing; anxiety about others' opinions; difficulty asserting needs; feeling powerless in your own life; digestive issues (solar plexus governs digestion and the stomach); low self-esteem despite external evidence of competence. Overactive: Controlling behavior; aggression and domination; ego inflation; bullying; inability to share power; workaholic patterns as power-seeking; excessive competitiveness.
The Wound: Power Taken Away
Solar plexus wounds typically originate from experiences where power was taken away, where authentic will was consistently overridden, or where the message was received that you were not allowed to claim your own space and direction. Controlling parents, bullying environments, abusive relationships, and cultures that systematically disempower certain groups all create solar plexus wounds. Healing requires reclaiming the inner authority that was suppressed.
Solar Plexus Healing Practices
Intentional decision-making practice: Small daily decisions made from genuine preference rather than "what should I do?" train the solar plexus. What do you actually want to eat? What do you genuinely prefer? Begin listening to your authentic preferences in low-stakes situations. Core strengthening exercises: Physical strengthening of the core (yoga navasana/boat pose, planks, ab exercises) is directly associated with solar plexus activation in somatic practices. Breathing exercises: Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) is specifically recommended in yoga for solar plexus activation — rapid, powerful exhales through the nose generate heat and power in this center. Affirmations: "I am powerful. I have the right to my own desires and direction. I trust myself."
