Eclipses: The Accelerators
Eclipses are supercharged new moons (solar eclipses) and full moons (lunar eclipses) that occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align precisely along the lunar nodal axis. They occur in pairs (solar + lunar) approximately every six months — eclipse season — and their effects can be felt for weeks before and after the event, with the overall themes of an eclipse season often playing out over six months to a year. Astrologers across all traditions consider eclipses the most powerful and fated turning points in the astrological calendar.
Solar Eclipses: New Beginnings
Solar eclipses occur at new moon when the Moon blocks the Sun — representing sudden new beginnings, often events that arrive unexpectedly or earlier than planned. Solar eclipses in a particular sign begin a new 18-19 year cycle of themes related to that sign. When a solar eclipse conjuncts a sensitive point in your natal chart, it initiates a new chapter in that area of life — often dramatically and in ways you couldn't have orchestrated yourself.
Lunar Eclipses: Culminations & Releases
Lunar eclipses occur at full moon when Earth's shadow falls on the Moon — representing culminations, completions, and revelations. What has been hidden or growing in the dark becomes visible; what needs to end does so; what has been built reaches its peak. Lunar eclipses on sensitive chart points often bring relationship shifts, public revelations, completions of major projects, or the resolution of long-standing situations.
The Nodal Axis and Eclipse Themes
Each eclipse season occurs along the axis defined by the North and South Nodes of the Moon. The signs the nodes are currently in determine the themes of the eclipse season — and these themes continue for approximately 18 months as the nodes move through those signs. Understanding what the current nodal axis is activating helps you anticipate and work with the collective themes of each eclipse season.
How to Work With Eclipses
The eclipse window (3 days before and after) is generally not ideal for initiating — it's too charged and unpredictable. Rather, use this time to be receptive: what is arriving, completing, or being revealed in your life? What does the eclipse seem to be initiating or closing? Set clear intentions on the solar eclipse (a more powerful version of new moon intention-setting). Release and allow completion on the lunar eclipse. Trust what eclipses bring — the changes they catalyze, even when difficult, consistently prove to be aligned with long-term growth.
